John Reid – Head Coach

I started at Whitechapel when I was only 7 years old and came up through the ranks to this position now.

At seven years old I started playing under my predecessor Bryan Lythgoe and loved every minute of it, from the training on the Saturday mornings, the league on the Friday night and the various tournaments we entered. As I started to get older the need for 11-a-side competition was too strong for me to resist and I switched clubs. The 11-a-side issue has never really been a problem, as children only grow into 11-a-side at high school age, whereas the bulk of our players are primary age, apart from a select few.

However I didn’t stay away long, and at the age of 14, Bryan asked me if I would come back to the club in a coaching position, an opportunity I leaped at. I stayed as a coach at Whitechapel J.F.C. until the age of 16 years and loved it. It was great to see the club and football in general, from the other side, Taking control of teams in tournaments and in the Friday night league.

At 16, as I left school, I was given a coaching apprenticeship at Preston North End’s Football in the Community department. It was a great opportunity and I loved the experience. In my first year there, I qualified as an FA Level 2 coach, a qualification I wasn’t expected to reach until the end of my second year. Then after my two year apprenticeship I was taken on as one of the Assistant Community Officers. This was my most successful year as I led the Ashton Under 13’s Girls team, who were representing Preston North End, to the semi-finals of the F.A.’s Football in the Community Cup, the furthest the club had ever been. Then also the Boys Under 11’s team, this time from Grimsargh Primary School, to the same stage in their variation of the same competiton.

At the end of that season, for personal choices, I left the club so I could gain more options for later life by registering at the University of Cumbria where I am loving my time. As I left Preston North End, I was offered the chance to become head coach here and I wasn’t going to turn it down.

The club is going from strength to strength and now you know all about me, I would be happy to learn all about you, so come on down on a Saturday morning and be part of this wonderful club.

James Huck

James is one of the Coaches I was lucky enough to inherit when I took over. He is a great person to be able to turn to for an opinion and at the age of only 17 has so much potential to be an outstanding coach.

He has been with the club for the last seven years of his life, and a coach for four of those years. He is already a qualified F.A. Level 1 coach and a Level 6 qualified referee and is looking to go up and try his hand at F.A. Level 2 in the new year. Personally I think he is more than capable of a first time pass, something I also achieved at that age.

He is another example of further opportunities at the club as, like myself progressed to coach from playing here himself. He prides himself on being able to make every element of football a fun element, always looking to get the best out of players, whilst keeping them smiling at the same time, which is what this club is all about.

He currently is the manager of the older team in the Friday night league and is doing his utmost to get them playing football, and if they win at the same time then it is a bonus.

A very confident and capable lad and is a great asset to the club.

Danny Sanderson

Danny is the youngest coach, but someone who I have high hopes for. With a little bit of football TLC I fully anticipate Danny to progress to the level I am at and the level James will soon be at.

At the age of only 14 Danny currently manages the youngest of the Friday night teams, and is able to lead coaching sessions after his own careful planning on a Saturday morning.

Yet another example of the ‘player-to-coach’ scheme at the club, he started playing at the age of only 5 years old and was offered and took a coaching position at 12 years. The youngest age anyone has ever been offered this position at the club.

In those first couple of years he was very much the ‘Warm up’ boy, not leading sessions, but having outlined to me his desire to improve, I have been taking a personal interest in helping him progress in any way I can. He is currently improving at a rate I never anticipated and I have full confidence in him and his coaching ability.

He has outlined to me his intention to move into the F.A. qualifications as soon as he is allowed by age limits, and he is well on his way to being at that level, and by the time he can take this exam at 16years he will walk the exam. He is currently going through the qualifications the F.A. offers for ‘juniors’   along with a “Junior sports leader award” and his GCSE certificates at school.

In my brief time here, I have learnt I can rely on Danny to give his full effort at anything that is asked and he is another great asset to the club.

You now know all that is possible to know about us coaches, so why not pop down on a Saturday and let us find out all about you. Come on, you know you want to. I hope to see you there.

The teams

At Whitechapel J.F.C. we have been entering the 7-a-side Friday night league run at Longridge Sports Centre ever since we have had enough players. I personally remember playing myself when I was at that age.

Currently we have two teams in the leagues, a young team in the ‘Year Four and Under’ league and one in the ‘Year Five and Six’ league.

Years Four and Under—WHITECHAPEL ROMANS

Our youngest team have really impressed me this year, picking up some fantastic results, being involved in some gripping and exciting games, and always putting in a performance that makes me proud to be their coach. Every week they put in 100% and leave the pitch smiling, no matter of the result. Danny takes charge of this team and for a couple of lads this is their first season for us.

We don’t really usually single out players for special praise, believing that it is a team game and every member of the squad is as important as each other. But we do feel that the two youngest members of the team, both in the first season deserve a mention. Whereas every one puts in a performance worth mentioning every week, Robert Burrows and Harrison Botes are not daunted by the older and bigger teams we play. They are two and three years younger than the oldest players in the league but turn out great showings every game.

But every member of the team are deserving of a mention. Harry Bowers is the captain of the team, really making a superb contribution to the team every week, and Ben Hardman is the vice captain and is very capable of filling in when Harry isn’t available. Oliver Barker has terrific footwork with the ball at his feet, and added a great sense of positional play recently. Sean Forrest is Mr. commitment, never stops running, never stops putting in the tackles nothing fazes him. William Slater is another who will not stop, putting in everything he has, usually with wonderful products. Josh Stirrup is a little pocket monster to the other teams, tackle after tackle, pass after pass, hard to find faults in most games. William Corbett is a player who I see turning more and more important each week, working hard on his personal game which is admirable. Jake Savage is another who is a smaller lad, but stands up to the bigger lads and always holds his own fantastically. Thomas Wilson , is the newest addition, joining the club very recently, but has added great determination to the squad. And Harrison Botes and Robert Burrows , both only in our youngest Saturday group but both have grown into very important parts of Danny’s squad.

We will be entering the leagues again and again, and are always looking to have more than one team in each league, so if you want a game, and you want to have a great time. Come on down!!

Years Five and Six—WHITECHAPEL SAXONS

Front Row: Henry Lowe, Thea Mallett (Captain), Josh Stirrup

Again I have been impressed with this team so far this season. They have only just moved up to the years five and six league this year, so in most cases they are playing against a team who is older than they are. Even though this is the case they always hold their own and are a respected team by all others in the league.

James is the coach who is in charge of this team, and has been for near on three years now. But this team is defiantly all about the players. No matter who the manager could be, these players would always go out and put in all the effort and dedication. Not taking anything away from James, but there are some really good performers in this team and they are the key players in the success of this team.

Captain Thea Mallett is the clubs only girl at the moment, but is defiantly up there with the best players in the entire league. We can always count on her to pull the team together when needed, and produce a killer pass. Henry Lowe is another gifted player, with a first touch and finishing ability other players in the league envy. William Styrup , like his brother in the younger team, is the little pocket rocket of the team. Full of running, determination and pace that scares me, never mind an opposition. Richard Hesketh has turned into Mr Utility all of a sudden. It is very pleasing to see someone who just likes playing football, and will be happy to play in any position on the pitch and always giving full effort to it, as Richard does. In all the games I have seen this season, I think defiantly we have one of the most solid players in the league in Tom Underwood . Always full blooded and fully committed in a tackle, which often pulls the team out of troublesome situations. This can be said the same with Tom Downe , solid as anyone. Always there when we need him is Tom and is willing to do anything for the team, which I love to see. Mitchell Riding has seemingly found his better position playing in defence, while he is capable of finding a pass I have seen him holding off two or three players at once, on his own while the rest of the team get back to help out, top defender. Harry Bashell can play anywhere, and infuriates teams as he can keep hold of a ball with his feet for an absolute age, without them getting near him, another outstanding player from our club. Robert Sanderson has come on an unbelievable amount this season according to James. He has been reliable in finding the net this season, producing the seasons only hat-trick in a 3-1 win only a few weeks back, fast becoming a stand out player.

This is another league which we enter every year, but we seem to have a short number in this age group and while I would like to enter two teams into this league, it isn’t possible at this time. So if you are in this age bracket please come down and have a game.
